Understanding cold & flu
Colds and influenza can cause similar symptoms, but the right advice depends on how unwell you are, how long symptoms have lasted and your risk factors. A doctor can help you understand what to do next and when testing or face-to-face care matters.
Reasons to speak with a doctor
- Runny or blocked nose, sore throat and cough
- Fever, body aches or tiredness
- Symptoms that are lingering or affecting work and study
How our doctors can help
- Assess your symptoms and discuss whether testing or an in-person review is needed.
- Explain symptom relief, hydration, rest and steps to reduce spreading infection.
- Consider treatment or a medical certificate when clinically appropriate.
When to seek urgent care

Your questions, answered
Do I need antibiotics for a cold or flu?
Colds and influenza are caused by viruses, so antibiotics do not treat them. A doctor will assess whether there are signs of another illness or a complication.
Can I request a medical certificate?
You can discuss this during your consultation. Certificates are issued only when the doctor considers them clinically appropriate.
Can every condition be treated online?
No. Telehealth is suitable for many non-emergency concerns, but some symptoms need a physical examination, tests or urgent care. Your doctor will explain when an in-person visit is the safer option.
Are doctors available 24/7?
Yes. ConsultNow offers doctor consultations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and public holidays. Waiting times depend on demand.
Will I definitely receive a prescription?
No. All prescriptions, referrals and medical certificates depend on your doctor assessing what is safe and clinically appropriate. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a particular treatment.
